How to Select Shoes to Wear With Jeans

  1. Consider the color of the denim. The darker the color, the dressier the jeans
  2. Remember that denim is a heavy material, and it should be coupled with shoes of a heavier weight, such as leather.
  3. Pair dark blue or black jeans with leather sandals or Mary Jane-style pumps for an informal evening out.
  4. Choose ankle boots or loafers when the climate gets cooler. Match socks to shoes for a dressier look, or incorporate a color that complements your top for a preppier contrast.
  5. Wear cowboy boots or knee-high boots with boot-cut jeans. The wider leg will allow the shaft of the pant to hang comfortably over the boot. Tucking jeans into boots is a rather awkward look and can become uncomfortable.
  6. Have some fun with color. Any color shoe will work with jeans. Match your shoe color to the color found in your top, or the trim of your jeans.
  7. Be comfortable. Athletic shoes, including running shoes, hiking boots and after-swim slip-ons, have gained wide appeal and acceptance as the ultracasual mate to denim. Socks are optional, but wear them with longer jeans for a more balanced look.

Is This Spring’s Can’t-Miss Accessory?

Noticed: One very vibrant outfit pick-me-up has surged ahead of the rest this spring. That’d be Prada’s neon-and-candy-striped stoles. A few eyebrows were raised when they marched down the Spring runway, but judging from the editors and tastemakers who’ve been sporting them at home and abroad, we’d say any objections have been long since laid to rest. At the men’s shows in Milan and Paris, Love’s Katie Grand (left) and Vogue Nippon’s Anna Dello Russo (right) brightened up their looks with the furs. The stoles aren’t restricted to the ladies, either. Here in New York, Marc Jacobs took his for a spin—reimagined as a scarf—at last night’s George Condo opening at the New Museum (center).

Fashion Fund Winner

CHRISTOPHER KANE has won the 2011 BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund. The Scottish designer beat off stiff competition - from Osman Yousefzada, Richard Nicoll, Peter Pilotto, Jonathan Saunders, menswear designer Patrick Grant of E Tautz and shoe designers Nicholas Kirkwood and Charlotte Dellal of Charlotte Olympia - for the prize, which comprises a cash payout of £200,000 as well as business mentoring from some of the fashion industry's biggest hitters.
"I am delighted that Christopher has won the second BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund Award," Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman said. "The shortlist was very strong and we were impressed by the level of talent which was inspiring. Christopher and Tammy have worked immensely hard and it is wonderful to see a designer with his vision and commitment rewarded."
Kane, who designs the Versus collection with Donatella Versace as well as his eponymous line, first caught our eye when he burst on to the fashion scene with his Central Saint Martins MA graduate collection in February 2006. By September of the same year, noted fashion editors packed the venue - even sitting on the stairs - to catch the debut on-schedule collection of his label, set up with his sister Tammy, as it took to the London Fashion Week catwalk. Since then, he has become famous for each one of his shows having a defining characteristic, allowing fashion watchers to reference each by a different name: the checked one; the floral leather one; the sequin one; the denim one; the jungle one.

All eyes on stylist Blow, years after her death

Isabella Blow, the eccentric British fashion editor and stylist best remembered for "discovering" and promoting Alexander McQueen, was one of the most influential personalities in the fashion world before she committed suicide in 2007.
Now two competing biographies — one being made into a movie — are telling her story, revealing a little-known struggle with depression and other emotional problems behind a glamorous facade of dramatic hats and decadent parties. Blow killed herself by drinking weed-killer, after repeat suicide attempts. She was just 48.
In some ways, Blow's story resembled a tragic, real-life version of "The Devil Wears Prada," the best-selling book and movie based around a fictional fashion magazine editor clearly inspired by the legendary American Vogue editor Anna Wintour.
Like that novel, Blow's biographies offer behind-the-scenes glimpses into the exclusive world of couture shows and designer soirees. And like it, they reveal the darker, cutthroat side of the high fashion industry.
Blow was a true fashionista, and she delighted in shocking people with bizarre headgear and daring clothes. She once wore a still-fishy smelling, crystal-studded lobster on her head to a fashion show, and for her wedding chose a dark purple medieval robe paired with a gold mesh, helmet-like headdress.
